Professor Gil Hyo-wook of Soonchunhyang University Cheonan Hospital begins to discover target substances for acute renal failure-inducing encephalopathy

Sep 19, 2024

Cheonan Hospital affiliated with Soonchunhyang University announced that Professor Gil Hyo-wook of the Department of Nephrology has started to diagnose and discover substances for metabolic encephalopathy caused by acute renal failure with the support of the Korea Research Foundation.

Professor Gil plans to reveal the mechanisms of metabolic encephalopathy such as consciousness disorders and delirium that occur in patients with acute renal failure, and to discover target materials through animal experiments such as single cell transcriptome and metabolite analysis.

Professor Gil Hyo-wook said that "target materials are important substances for diagnosing and treating changes in consciousness in patients with acute renal failure" and that "discovered substances will be useful in clinical practice such as new drug development in the future.""

Professor Gil's research project 'Examination of the kidney-brain axis through glucose metabolism in acute renal failure-induced metabolic encephalopathy' was recently selected as a mid-sized research project by the Korea Research Foundation, and it will run for three years until August 2027 with a total of 210 million won in research funds.
