Sep 21, 2024

Professor Lee Sang-kyu (director of clinical trial research) of the Department of Psychiatry at Hallym University Chuncheon Sacred Heart Hospital will conduct a clinical trial on confirmation of the digital treatment device A-STOP (Alcoholism Smart Therapy on Prescription) approved by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (hereinafter referred to as the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety) for one year and four months from August 26 to December 2025.

Alcohol use disorder is a mental disorder related to alcohol use that cannot be self-controlled, has symptoms of tolerance and withdrawal, and requires treatment while continuing to drink even though social or occupational problems arise due to repeated drinking.

According to a 2021 mental health survey report by the Ministry of Health and Welfare's National Mental Health Center, the lifetime prevalence of alcohol use disorders is 11.6%, higher than nicotine use disorders (9.5%), depression disorders (7.7%), and anxiety disorders (9.3%).

'A-STOP' is a digital therapeutic agent (DTX) for treating alcoholism. Professor Lee Sang-gyu plans to verify the effectiveness of lowering the treatment threshold and solving symptoms in a living environment through this digital treatment device.

Professor Lee Sang-gyu said, "Alcohol and several addictive diseases have low motivation and compliance for treatment, and there is no definite treatment, so a single treatment technique was inevitably insufficient.""Digital treatment devices "A-STOP" will lower the treatment threshold for alcoholism and contribute to addressing unmet medical needs for the improvement and recovery of alcoholism symptoms more effectively in living environments."

The clinical trial is organized by Hallym University Chuncheon Sacred Heart Hospital and will be jointly participated by Hanyang University Hospital, Konyang University Hospital, and Wonju Severance Christian Hospital.

This clinical trial is a clinical trial to approve the use of digital treatment devices to evaluate the effectiveness of alcohol symptoms, and in addition to patients diagnosed with mental and behavioral disorders caused by alcohol use, Gangwon-do residents who are suffering from physical and psychological difficulties caused by drinking can participate through preliminary evaluation. Inquiries about participation can be made to the outpatient department of psychiatry at Hallym University Chuncheon Sacred Heart Hospital.
