Eye correction during Chuseok holiday, 'This' is important

Sep 03, 2024

After an exceptionally hot long summer, Chuseok is soon with a cool breeze.

Already, the ophthalmology department has received inquiries and reservations to get vision correction during the Chuseok holiday. There are many young office workers these days as well as college students.

If you plan to use your spare time to correct your eyesight, such as the Chuseok holiday, you should keep in mind the recovery period.

This is because laser vision correction techniques such as LASIK, LASEK, SMILE LASIK, and SMILE PRO, which are popularly known, may slightly differ in the period required to return to daily life depending on the method. However, even if a specific method is desired, other methods may be considered after detailed examination. This is because there are different surgical methods that can be applied depending on the condition of the eye, such as vision, corneal condition, and astigmatism.

Laser vision correction surgery is an operation that adjusts the refractive index by cutting a certain portion of the cornea. During surgery, corneal damage should be minimized as much as possible to accelerate recovery and reduce the risk of side effects.

LASIK, which was first introduced, is a method of correcting vision with a laser after cutting the cornea by about 24mm. Instead of the corneal epithelium where nerves are gathered, it has the advantage of less pain because the corneal parenchyma with dull pain is cut to make a section. The recovery period is also as fast as three to five days. However, because corneal sections are made, the thickness or intensity of the cornea determines whether or not surgery is possible, and high myopia and high myopia with a large amount of corneas can be difficult to completely correct. The strength to withstand intraocular pressure is weakened, and aftereffects such as corneal dilation may occur.

Lacek is a surgery that removes one eyelid of the corneal surface, corrects it with a laser, and covers the surface with a therapeutic contact lens to regenerate the surface. Compared to LASIK, the cornea has a stronger power to withstand intraocular pressure and can shave more corneas, enabling high myopia or astigmatism correction. However, because the corneal nerve peels off the corneal epithelium, discomfort such as pain and tears is quite severe during the recovery period. It takes about a week or two to recover your eyesight and return to your daily life, so it's better to plan enough.

Smile LASIK and Smile Pro vision correction are advantageous if you want to recover during the Chuseok holiday less than a week ago and return to your daily life without any inconvenience.

Among laser vision correction procedures, corneal damage is the least, and the corneal surface is fully preserved. Because the surface of the cornea remains almost the same compared to other methods, it is evaluated as having the least aftereffects such as corneal dilation, corneal confusion, and light spreading. Moreover, if you undergo surgery with a 1mm maximum incision, the amount of corneal incision is less than 10% of the traditional LASIK. Since there is little nerve damage, there is no pain after surgery, and the vision recovery is fast and the prognosis is stable enough to enable daily life the day after surgery. If you undergo surgery during the Chuseok holiday, there is no obstacle to going to school or work after the holiday.

However, if the cornea is too thin to be operated or if the vision is severely poor, lens insertion (ICL) may be the final option instead of laser vision correction. If you consider vision correction surgery, it is recommended to accurately check the condition of your eyes through an examination and choose the optimal method.
