Severance Hospital 'Severe Work History Clinic' Provision of Customized Treatment

Sep 25, 2024

Severance Hospital opened a clinic for severe work force. Neurology, pediatric and adolescent departments, cardiothoracic surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, ophthalmology, and endocrinology will gather to provide fast and optimized treatment for patients with severe work history.

Severe work history is literally a disease that does not put strength in the muscles. To use muscles, acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter from motor nerves, must bind to acetylcholine receptors in the muscles. When antibodies that interfere with binding due to abnormal immune systems occur, acetylcholine fails to function properly and weakens its strength. It can occur in various muscles, such as muscles in the face, arms, and legs, as well as muscles that swallow food or move eyes.

The loss of strength caused by severe work history can be overcome through medication. However, because severe work history is impossible to cure, long-term drug treatment is required. Symptoms can be controlled with immunosuppressants and steroids, but side effects can lead to decreased immunity, diabetes, and osteoporosis. This is why it is necessary to control drugs according to the degree of symptoms of severe work history.

At Severance Hospital's Severe Workforce Clinic, various port clinical departments necessary for the treatment of severe workforce have joined forces.

Neurology is providing customized treatment for patients by diagnosing severe work history and evaluating disease activity. Clinical trials for various new treatments under development are also underway. Thoracic surgery treats thymoma or thymic hypertrophy seen in more than half of patients with surgery, and if it is difficult to control eyelid drooping and overlapping with drugs, surgery can be performed in ophthalmology. Cataracts, glaucoma, diabetes, and osteoporosis, which are side effects from long-term steroid use, are managed by ophthalmology and endocrinology.

Clinical departments have also been prepared to proceed with treatment tailored to patient characteristics. Since severe work history rarely occurs in children, pediatric and adolescent departments are participating in clinics, and obstetrics and gynecology professors are also treating pregnant patients for prenatal care and delivery.

Professor Kim Seung-woo said, "Severe work history is a rare and intractable disease, and it is important to control the level of drug treatment for symptom management." The Severance Hospital Severe Work History Clinic can also manage side effects that may appear during the treatment process and is actively introducing new treatments."

Meanwhile, on the 7th, a disease briefing session was held for patients with severe work history and their families at the only hall of the Ebison Life Research Center. Patients and their families were able to learn treatment methods such as the latest treatment for severe work history, as well as side effects and management methods of severe work history delivered by professors in various clinical departments such as ophthalmology and thoracic surgery.
