The head of a hospital in Bangkok, Thailand, has sparked controversy by saying he will lock smokers in so-called 'gas chambers'.

According to Thai media outlets including Martichon and Saeng, Lientong Nanna, director of the Moncoutwatana Hospital in Bangkok's Lakshi district, announced on his SNS that smokers who violate the ban would be confined until 100% of the cigarette smoke was inhaled from the 'gas chamber', which has been turned into an old public phone booth.

The former military general said he would use phone booths donated for COVID-19 testing between 2020 and 2022 as a means of enforcing a ban on smoking in hospitals. This was also called 'Hitler's Room'.

The phone booth, which will be used as a smoking room, is equipped with a lock sensor that detects smoke, and the door opens only when the cigarette smoke disappears completely. Since there is no ventilation facility to suck up smoke, smokers can come out only when they completely smoke.

"It may seem cruel, but it's to prevent smoking in the hospital area of Montkutwatana," he warned. "It's best not to use it."

Earlier in May, he was sued for corporal punishment for slapping and undressing a 14-year-old boy who was smoking in a hospital bathroom.
