According to data received by Rep. Seo Mi-hwa (Democratic Party of Korea), a member of the National Assembly's Health and Welfare Committee, from the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the total number of syphilis infections discovered through a total monitoring transition from January to August 2024 surged by 352% compared to 2023.
In Japan, where the spread of syphilis infection is unusual, since 2013, the number of syphilis infections has exceeded 1,000, it has reached 4,000 in 2016 and 5,000 in 2017, exceeding 13,250 in 2022, the highest ever.
The U.S. also recorded 207,255 cases in 2022, with the spread of syphilis infections at the worst level in 70 years. In February this year, Dr. Laura Bachmann, acting director of STDs at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, recently noted that health authorities' resources are concentrated in public health emergencies such as COVID-19 and M.Fox, which threatens the health of STDs due to relatively reduced budget support.
It is pointed out that Korea, which has more than 1,000 people infected with syphilis before the end of the year in 2024, also needs budget support to block the further transmission of syphilis. Lawmaker Seo Mi-hwa recently asked the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention whether to set up a budget and said that only part of the travel expenses for epidemiological investigations have been supported within the budget for sexually transmitted infectious diseases.
Representative Seo said, `We hope to understand the exact scale and dynamics of syphilis infection through the new monitoring system this year and use it as a basis for rapid budget preparation in the event of the spread of syphilis," he stressed.
