About 130,000 drunk driving cases a year killed 1,161 people in five years

Min Hong-chul (Democratic Party of Korea, Kim Hae-gap, Gyeongnam), a member of the National Assembly's Land, Infrastructure and Transport Committee, analyzed the number of drunk drivers caught in the past five years (2019-2023). By year, ▲137,772 cases in 2019 ▲117,549 cases in 2020 ▲115,882 cases in 2021 ▲132,283 cases in 2022 ▲131,150 cases in 2023. Among them, 441,212 cases (70.6%) were canceled, and the rate of license cancellation in 2023 compared to 2019 was confirmed to have increased by more than 8%.
By region, Gyeonggi Province (south and north) had the highest number of cases with 179,276, followed by Seoul (71,448) and Gyeongnam (43,750).
In the past five years, a total of 75,950 traffic accidents caused by drunk driving have been confirmed. In particular, 1,161 deaths and 122,566 injuries were reported, accounting for 163 percent of casualties compared to accidents.
