Controversy is brewing over a video of a candidate running for the U.S. State House of Representatives stealing election flyers from his opponent.

According to the New York Post, Republican candidate Joseph Mastrojani, who is running for Congress in northern New York, put his promotional flyer in place of six-term Democratic candidate Angelo Santa Barbara's campaign flyer in a voter's mailbox on the 17th (local time).

The image was captured by a camera installed outside the voter's home.

The campaigner behind him laughed and sympathized while Mastrojani changed the flyer. The leaflet was folded and put in a pocket.

Stealing mail in the United States is a federal crime that carries a prison sentence.

The local Democratic election camp immediately sued Mastrojani for theft to the post office, state election commission and state police.

He then urged Mastroyanni to stop campaigning and resign immediately from his candidacy.

Mastrojani has not responded to inquiries from local media.
