Food poisoning patients increase 3.5 times in 3 years since COVID-19 in 2020

The number of food poisoning patients has increased rapidly in three years since the outbreak of COVID-19.
According to Seo Young-seok (Democratic Party of Korea, Bucheon-si, Gyeonggi-do), a member of the National Assembly's Health and Welfare Committee, submitted by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, the number of food poisoning patients recorded 8,789 in 2023. This is 3.5 times higher than in 2020.
By reason, 26.7% of food poisoning cases occurred from 2020 to 2024 were found to have been caused by salmonella, followed by pathogenic E. coli and norovirus at 20.2% and 14.4%, respectively. The pathogens with the highest growth rate in 2024 compared to 2020 were Salmonella (381.9%), followed by norovirus (295.1%) and pathogenic E. coli (264.2%).
In terms of the number of cases by location, school and other restaurants had the highest rate of 71.2% (768 out of 1,079 cases) over the past four years, and the growth rate in 2024 compared to 2020 was the highest at 378.6% (56 cases → 268).
Amid a surge in food poisoning accidents and patients, administrative dispositions decreased from 349 in 2020 to 249 in 2023, with 68.7% (677) of 985 administrative dispositions imposed over four years. 66.7% (57 cases → 19 cases) of the administrative disposition with the highest reduction rate in 2023 compared to 2020.
Representative Seo said, `The number of food poisoning cases, which had been slowed down by the COVID-19 outbreak, is increasing rapidly due to the combination of the increasing number of single-person households and the characteristics of modern society, which is dominated by eating out"It is required to establish an effective monitoring system for the state and local governments along with preventive measures to reduce food poisoning accidents that increase every year.", he pointed out.
