Hallym University (President Choi Yang-hee) visited Massachusetts University in Worcester, Massachusetts, USA for two days from September 26 to 27 to discuss various measures to cultivate talents who will lead the global medical AI field and strengthen research cooperation.

The visit was conducted to strengthen global joint research and cooperation and seek specific partnerships by expanding the MOU signed between Hallym University and the Massachusetts University School of Medicine in May to Gangwon State, and key officials, including Kim Jin-tae, Governor of Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province, Yoon Hee-sung, Chairman of Ilsong Academy of School Corporation, Lee Jae-joon, Head of Hallym University Medical Artificial Intelligence Convergence Talent Development Project (Chuncheon Sungsim Hospital), and Yoo Kyung-ho, Director of Hallym University Medical School.

During the exchange, the visiting group met with key officials, including Terence R. Flotte, dean of the University of Massachusetts Medical School, Jeron Allison, vice president of the University of Massachusetts Medical School, and Jatin Dave, professor of the University of Massachusetts Medical School and chief medical officer of Massachusetts. Through research and business consultations, they agreed to promote joint research combining medical and artificial intelligence, health care, digital healthcare, cooperation for global medical technology development, and human exchanges for talent training.

On the 26th, the visiting group visited the Memorial Medical Center of the University of Massachusetts to examine major medical centers, facilities, medical systems and systems. This medical center operates a regional trauma center and an emergency room with two helicopters and serves as a regional hub hospital. These geographical environments and roles are similar to those of Hallym University Chuncheon Sacred Heart Hospital, a hospital affiliated with Hallym University and Hallym University Medical Center located in Gangwon-do. Accordingly, both universities decided to continue international cooperation with a joint research topic to improve the health level of local residents.

The subsequent research exchange was attended by Professor Adrian Zai, chief executive of artificial intelligence and medical informatics at the University of Massachusetts, and Mark D. Johnson, head of neurosurgery, and discussed in-depth international joint research on cooperative systems with small hospitals in the region, mainly at regional hospitals such as the University of Massachusetts Memorial Medical Center.

In addition, he held a meeting with the Memorial Medical Center Medical Information System Team led by Professor Eric J. Alper to think about medical data for international joint research. On the 27th, Hallym University, Gangwon State, and Massachusetts University officials signed an MOU and agreed to promote various technology development, research, and education programs for global joint research and talent development.

Yoon Hee-sung, chairman of Ilsong Academy, the school corporation, said, `Massachusetts University School of Medicine is one of the world's leading universities with active research activities in international medical and AI fields, and we look forward to seeing Hallym University move forward as a creative and convergent global leader in AI through this global cooperation.'

Lee Jae-joon, head of the Medical Artificial Intelligence Convergence Talent Development Project at Hallym University (Director of Chuncheon Sacred Heart Hospital, Hallym University) said, "Massat Massachusetts State University is a prestigious state university that has produced a Nobel Prize winner in 2024 (Victor R. Ambros, PhD) and is the best partner of Hallym University and Hallym University Medical Center, which are striving to develop world-class medical technologies and talents. In the future, through active exchanges with Gangwon State and the University of Massachusetts Medical School, we will further accelerate the cultivation of customized convergent talents that combine medical and artificial intelligence," he said.

Meanwhile, Hallym University aims to cultivate creative talents that connect the community and the world under the slogan `THE NEW Hallym' with the goal of 'K-University' based on AI education. Based on AI education, Hallym University is working with related research institutes in local communities and universities to cultivate creative talents that encompass the medical and artificial intelligence fields and develop innovative education specialized in future industries. One of them was selected as the 「Medical Artificial Intelligence Convergence Talent Training Project」 organized by the Korea Health Industry Promotion Agency in 2022, and Hallym University School of Medicine and Information Science are carrying out the project together, and various curriculum and research programs are operated to cultivate convergent talents with medical knowledge and artificial intelligence technology.
