As the weather gets chilly, more and more people are suffering from sudden tears. Tear shedding, also known as 'eurology', occurs when the tear glands are excessively stimulated, resulting in excessive production of tears or problems with the tear path and poor tear discharge. It is known as a senile disease that often occurs with age, but it can also occur in newborns and children, so caution is needed.

About 5% to 6% of newborns are born with a thin membrane covering the end of the nasal canal, which is a tear discharge path, and if this membrane does not disappear naturally, the tear path can be blocked, resulting in birth nasal canal obstruction. Symptoms usually appear within a month of birth, and symptoms such as tear stagnation and eye booger persist.

Inborn nasal canal obstruction usually improves naturally within a year of age, and symptoms can be expected to improve through a tear bag massage or antibiotic eye drops. For the tear bag massage, you should press the tear bag located inside the eye with your index finger at least twice a day. When pressing the inside of the eye, if you press it enough to feel a hard bone on the nose and sweep it down, it can increase the pressure in the tear bag and nose tube while preventing secretions from flowing back to the tear point. If the secretion is severe, it is helpful to use antibiotic eye ointment or eye drops.

If symptoms such as tears and eye boogers do not improve even after 6 months of age or more, it is recommended to see a cosmetic ophthalmologist. Check that there are no problems with the intraocular plaques or other problems, and depending on the diagnosis, tests can be performed for the stuttering of the nasal canal. The timing of implementation is divided, but it is usually recommended between 8 and 12 months of age. Depending on the condition of the child, it can be performed once or twice, and if there is no improvement after the procedure or the procedure is too late, a silicone tube insertion in the nasal tube is performed under general anesthesia.

Occasionally, infants with symptoms of tears after suffering severe conjunctivitis can be seen in newborns without symptoms, and in this case, the stenosis or obstruction of the fistula, which is usually the entrance to the tear path, is more likely than the closure of the nasal canal. Even at this time, treatment is needed to open and maintain the tear path by inserting a silicone tube. Recently, the accuracy and success rate have increased significantly compared to the past by inserting a silicone tube in the nasal canal tube after drilling or widening the tear path through a micro-nude endoscope that can directly observe the lesion inside the tear path.

In addition to the obstruction of the congenital nasal canal, one of the causes of teardrops in children is the eyelid that curls in and stimulates the eyeball. When the lobe occurs, a lot of tears are secreted, causing frequent eye boogers and frequent rubbing of the eyes. In severe cases, it can cause astigmatism and corneal wounds and ulcers caused by continuous stimulation can affect vision development. After observing the progress periodically, corrective surgery is considered after the age of 4, but if the symptoms are severe, surgery may be performed before that.

In addition, teardrops can be caused by various causes such as allergies, conjunctivitis, and rhinitis, so it is recommended to visit an ophthalmologist for treatment to determine the exact cause. In the case of congestion, there is a high possibility of conjunctivitis and keratitis, so you should seek medical treatment and treatment at an ophthalmologist as soon as possible.

Choi Hye-sun, a specialist at the Plastic Ophthalmology Center at Kim Ophthalmology Hospital, said "Tears can occur at all ages, from newborns to elderly patients, and appropriate treatment should be given according to each period and cause"In the case of newborns and infants, there is an appropriate timing of treatment, so you should consult with a specialist to get accurate diagnosis and treatment not too late" he stressed.
