At least 26 people have reportedly died in Iran, where alcohol is officially banned, after drinking fake alcohol in recent days.

According to Iran's state-run IRNA news agency and U.S. media NBC, dozens of men and women who drank alcohol made of toxic methanol have died in several cities and towns in northern Iran's Mazandaran, Gilan and western Hamadan provinces. So far, at least 26 people have been identified, and hundreds are said to be receiving treatment.

The source of the trafficking is unclear.

Alcohol consumption has been generally banned in Iran since the 1979 Islamic Revolution brought hardline Islamists to power.

However, many Iranians are known to buy alcohol from smugglers who secretly make it. It is also openly traded on the black market.

Some people secretly make alcohol at home for personal consumption.

Meanwhile, alcoholism has been increasing rapidly in Iran in recent years. In 2020 alone, more than 700 people died from toxic alcohol, according to the survey.
