'An era of division and extinction, a strategy for rewriting survival' '20th anniversary' SBS D Forum (SDF), held on November 12
World-class demographers will gather together at the SBS D Forum (SDF), which marks its 20th anniversary this year, to find solutions to low birthrates. The theme of this forum is 'The Age of Divide and Extinction, Rewriting Survival Strategies', and world-renowned demographer David Coleman, professor emeritus of Oxford University, and former Japanese Secretary of State Hiroya Masuda, author of 'Local Extinction', will be the keynote speaker side by side.

Professor Coleman, who also served as a special adviser to the British Environment Ministry, the Housing Ministry, and the Interior Minister, said at the United Nations Population Forum in 2006 when Korea's total fertility rate was 1.13. It is expected to make authoritative suggestions based on long-term research to Korea, which fell to 0.72 last year.

Former Japanese Minister of Internal Affairs and Communications Hiroya Masuda is the author of the "Masuda Report", which warned in 2014 that 896 local governments, half of Japan's, could be extinguished. Recently, he served as the vice chairman of the private think tank 'Population Strategy Council' and led the preparation of a report 'Population Vision 2100' that contains long-term population plans. Korea's regions are also in serious crisis, with the recent announcement that Busan has entered the extinction risk stage for the first time among metropolitan cities nationwide. In this situation, the lecture by former General Secretary Masuda is expected to be a time to reflect on what lessons can be learned from Japan's experience over the past decade.

After the keynote speech, Cho Young-tae, head of the Population Policy Research Center at Seoul National University, will seek a "Korean-style solution" through discussions with the two keynote speakers. The feast of demography by top scholars from each country is expected to provide an insight not only to the general public but also to the government and political circles that put solving the population problem first.

In addition, top knowledge partners in Korea, including Seoul National Institute for Future Strategy, Seoul National University Institute for Social Development, Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs, Gachon University Startup College, and Seoul National University Climate Research Institute, participated in the joint research for the forum. After the U.S. presidential election, Korea's direction and national strategy, industrial strategy in the era of population decline, solutions to regional hollowing-out issues, and possible alternatives to immigration will be covered from various perspectives.

In addition, celebrities in various fields, including Peter Singer, an honorary professor at Princeton University who was on stage as an SDF speaker in 2021, singer Yoon-ha, who celebrated his 20th anniversary of his debut, composer Kim Hyung-seok, who dreams of going beyond K-pop, actor Kim Seok-hoon, who has been thinking about environmental issues with YouTube 'My Trash Man' and now known as YouTubers 'Chungju Man' Kim Sun-tae, an expert at Chungju City Hall, will also visit SDF.

The Social Contribution Knowledge Sharing Project 'SDF 2024' hosted by terrestrial broadcasters will be held at DDP (Dongdaemun Design Plaza) in Seoul on November 12, and anyone can participate for free.
