Professor Bong Joon-woo of Korea University Guro Hospital won the European Society of Oncology Surgeons 'Best Paper Award'

Bong Joon-woo, a professor of colorectal and analgesic surgery at Korea University Guro Hospital, recently won the 'Best presented paper award'' at the 43rd European Society of Surgeons (ESSO)' held in Belgium.
Professor Bong Joon-woo was honored by publishing a paper on the theme of 「Prognostic role of palliative resection for distant metastasis in patients with colorectal cancer over 80 years old」.
In the paper, Professor Bong reported the efficacy of active resection by analyzing that patients with colorectal cancer aged 80 years or older treated at Korea University Guro Hospital from 2015 to 2022 who received multidisciplinary-based treatment for liver, lung, and peritoneal metastases, and patients who underwent complete resection for all metastatic lesions and those who underwent palliative resection alone had a total survival rate of 60.0% and 26.3%, respectively.
In addition, by presenting indications and risk factors for this, objective treatment results were presented to determine the range of surgical treatment to achieve optimal treatment effect when elderly colorectal cancer patients with various underlying diseases show metastatic lesions.
Professor Bong said "Aged patients often give up active treatment only because of the burden of treatment as well as underlying diseases. Through this paper, we found that surgical treatment is effective for stage 4 colorectal cancer patients over the age of 80 and explained the significance of the study in that it suggests treatment directions for increasing metastatic colorectal cancer patients in the current super-aging society."
In addition, "This study is especially meaningful in that it is the result of the efforts of medical staff in each field to provide the best treatment even for elderly patients who are difficult to treat" " Even elderly patients should closely evaluate the condition of each patient, consult with medical staff, and consider active treatment. We hope that the results of this study will serve as an important basis for determining the treatment policy for elderly colorectal cancer patients in the future and help improve the survival rate of patients."
