Oct 03, 2024

Professor Kim Yong-gu of the Department of Mental Health at Korea University Ansan Hospital has published an English book 'Recent Advances and Challenges in the Treatment of the Major Depressive Disorder'.

For the past half century, studies of depression have mainly focused on neurotransmitters, including serotonin, dopamine, and adrenaline. However, the pathophysiology of depression is more complex and involves several biological processes, including neurotransmitter dysfunction, neural network changes, abnormal neuroendocrine stress responses, and chronic inflammation. Recently, BDNF, cytokines, and neuropeptides have been identified as important factors in the pathophysiology of depression.

Focusing on the treatment of depression, the book consists of ▲ new treatment based on molecular biology ▲ new treatment based on brain network ▲ new treatment based on psychology ▲ new treatment based on digital psychiatry ▲ personalized treatment.

Professor Kim emphasized that "Depression is a brain disease with heterogeneous symptoms characterized by changes in emotional, cognitive, and behavioral functions, although it is also common among the general public. Therefore, customized treatment using various treatment techniques is required depending on the characteristics of each patient's depression."

Master scholars from home and abroad participated in the writing of the book, and it is available through Pubmed, a research database at the National Library of Medicine in the United States, as a piece 'Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology' from Springer Nature, a German publishing company specializing in science books.
