Professor Park Won-myung of Yeouido St. Mary's Hospital publishes the fourth edition of the bipolar disorder textbook

Oct 09, 2024

After five years, Professor Park Won-myung (CEO) of the Department of Psychiatry at Yeouido St. Mary's Hospital of Catholic University published a textbook titled 『Textbook of Bipolar Disorders』, which compiles professional knowledge about bipolar disorder (bipolar disease ).

The fourth edition reflects new research results and theories published at home and abroad after the first edition (CEO Park Won-myung, Professor Jeon Deok-in) published in 2009, the second edition published in 2014, and the third edition published in 2019.

Professor Park Won-myung of Yeouido St. Mary's Hospital and Professor Jeon Deok-in of Hallim University Sacred Heart Hospital were co-representative authors, and 48 experts with bipolar disorder from major medical schools and general/specialized hospitals nationwide participated as authors.

This fourth edition is largely composed of two parts like the previous three. The first part has the form of a traditional textbook and consists of 14 sub-topics under the four main themes of outline, cause theory, clinical features, and treatment of bipolar disorder, covering a wide range of contents related to bipolar disorder. The second part selects 20 sub-topics that are issues within four categories: concept and diagnosis, specific diagnosis, treatment, and others, and introduces them along with the most recent research results. Some of the contents of Part 2 may be hypotheses or opinions that have not yet been established, but they are very useful in terms of looking at bipolar disorder in various ways.

Professor Park Won-myung (CEO) said, "In the past five years since the publication of the third edition, the diagnosis, concept, and treatment guidelines for bipolar disorder at home and abroad have been constantly changing and revised, so it was essential to publish the fourth edition." The ability of the domestic expert group to revise textbooks three times every five years and the fact that many of the research results of domestic researchers are included in the revised textbook mean that the research and treatment of bipolar disorder in Korea is already at the international level."

In the future, the Korean Society of Depression and the Korean Bipolar Disorders Forum (KBF) will take the level of treatment for bipolar disorder to the next level and lead through constant research and various academic work.

Professor Park has published a booklet for the general public, 'Travel to bipolar disorder (2015)' and 'Almost Everything about bipolar disorder: A strategy to overcome bipolar disorder (2021)' with 37 experts. We have translated and published a guide for patients, 'Guide to Overcoming bipolar Disorders - Road to the Healing of bipolar disorder (2013)' and a guide for patients' families, 'How to Live as a Family of bipolar patients (2014)'. Since 2002, the 'Korean Bipolar Disorder Drug Treatment Algorithm and Guidelines (KMAP-BP)" for psychiatrists has been revised every four years, and the 5th revised edition (KMAP-BP 2022) has recently been published in 2022.

Professor Park has written all books for doctors, medical students, patients, families, and the general public in the field of bipolar disorder, which has had a profound impact on the development of psychiatric and mood disorders in Korea. In recognition of his achievements, he was awarded the 'Green Tide Order of Merit' by the Korean government in 2021 and will be inducted into the hall of fame for the first time in the history of the Korean Society of Depression and bipolar disorder in March next year.
