People around you often complain that their bodies are weak and lethargic due to stress and overwork. However, unlike simply lack of energy, if you are unable to do something in practice, it may be a symptom of 'severe work history', so care should be taken.

Severe work history is a type of autoimmune disease caused by the body's immune cells attacking normal tissues or substances. It is a disease caused by the failure of muscle contraction by blocking, altering or destroying the function of the receptor in the neuromuscular junction where nerve stimulation moves muscles.

The most typical symptoms of this disease are muscle weakness and fatigue. In particular, eye muscle weakness, such as eyelid sagging and double vision, is common in the early stages, and in addition, facial muscle weakness can make it difficult to chew, speak, and swallow. Fifteen percent of all patients with severe work history develop only eye symptoms, but the remaining 85 percent invade other muscles, causing limb placebo, and in severe cases, they are even weak to the respiratory muscles and receive ventilator treatment.

It can be often confused with lethargy, which seems to be lack of energy and sagging, but it does not interfere with muscle strength when doing something, while patients with severe work history experience difficulty in maintaining their strength when lifting or using strength. The most important medical history in diagnosing severe work history is showing the ups and downs of muscle weakness, such as having few symptoms in the morning and then getting worse in the afternoon, or getting better when resting or sleeping. In the early stages, symptoms may disappear due to repeated deterioration and improvement, but in the end, it worsens and invades the whole body.

For accurate diagnosis, listening to a detailed medical history and examination are important, and if severe work history is suspected, it can be diagnosed through repeated nerve stimulation tests, acetylcholine receptor antibody measurements, and anticholinergic drug administration tests.

Severe work history is an autoimmune disease, so the concept of cure does not apply. However, the goal is to prevent the disease from worsening and properly control and relieve symptoms while maintaining the immune system. Treatment methods include acetylcholine esterase inhibitors, immunosuppressants, adrenocorticotropic hormone drugs, intravenous immunoglobulin, plasma separation exchange, and thymectomy.

Professor So Jung-min of the Department of Neurology at Korea University Ansan Hospital said, `Severe work history is a disease that does not disappear and requires lifelong attention, but if you continue to treat and manage it after early detection, you can live your daily life without much inconvenience. Occasionally, if the symptoms disappear after taking the drug, the patient voluntarily stops taking the drug and no longer visits the hospital, which can lead to risks such as worsening symptoms and work history crisis in the future, so it should be managed steadily through continuous consultation with a specialist," he said.
