Research has shown that the seed of radish and herbal medicine 'Raphanus sativus Linne' are effective in treating degenerative lumbar disc (lumbar disc escape).

This demonstrated the proliferation and protection effect of nuclide cells in the disk.

Researchers Kim Hyun-sung and Yeo Chang-hwan's research papers on the protection of internal medullary nucleus cells were published in the SCI(E)-level international journal Biology (IF=3.6), said Ha In-hyuk, head of the Spinal Joint Research Institute at Jaseng Oriental Medicine Hospital.

The disc at the waist consists of fibrous rings and water nuclei, and more than 80% of the water nuclei are formed in the form of moisture, which acts as a buffer to prevent collisions between vertebrae. However, when damaged by external shocks such as traffic accidents, wrong posture, aging, etc., internal water nuclei flow out, causing inflammation and pain. In particular, in the case of degenerative disks, the number of nuclei in the disk decreases due to aging and weight gain, and the endothelial extract showed the effect of protecting the male nucleus cells and suppressing regression.

The research team administered 25·100·400μg/mL of endoplasmic reticulum extract to the disc nucleus cells, respectively, and treated 400μM of hydrogen peroxide for each administration group to induce damage to the nucleus cells. As a result, the endoplasmic reticulum extract inhibited cell death, increasing cell viability. The higher the concentration of the endoplasmic reticulum extract, the more active the cells became, and the survival rate doubled.

The expression of TREM2, which increased 3.5 times after hydrogen peroxide treatment in the treatment group that did not administer the endoblast extract to the male nucleus cells, also decreased to a normal level in the endoblast administration group. TREM2 is a protein that accelerates the regression of meningeal cells, with higher TREM2 expression in meningeal tissues of patients with degenerative discs.

The endoplasmic reticulum extract also significantly reduced the levels of ADAMTS-4, ADAMTS-5, MMP3, and MMP13, which are genes involved in regression in the disc nucleus. They increased up to nearly fourfold after treatment with hydrogen peroxide, but their associated levels decreased by up to half or less with administration of the endoblast extract. In addition, aggrecan and collagen, which are extracellular matrix components that contribute to the stabilization of meningeal cells, were increased.

Kim Hyun-sung, a researcher at the Spinal Joint Research Institute of Jaseng Oriental Medicine Hospital, said "This study confirmed the potential for the treatment of degenerative discs in herbal medicines"We will continue to analyze the ingredients of various herbal medicines and study their therapeutic effects to take the lead in the scientific development of oriental medicine."
