"Regional emergency centers reduce treatment of critically ill patients by 14% and 119 re-transports surge by 57%"
Oct 07, 2024
It was confirmed that the number of treatments in the emergency room of the regional emergency medical center decreased this year compared to last year.
In particular, it was pointed out that the medical crisis was suspected as one of the causes, as a decline appeared since February this year.
According to the data submitted by Seo Young-seok (Democratic Party of Korea, Bucheon-si, Gyeonggi-do), a member of the National Assembly's Health and Welfare Committee, from the National Medical Center, there were 43,921 cases of severe acute emergency patients (acute myocardial infarction, acute stroke, and acute severe trauma) from January to July this year. This is an 11% decrease from 49,374 cases during the same period last year.
This is different from the increase in the number of treatment of three major acute and severe emergency patients in 2023 compared to 2022. The number of serious emergency patients in the three major acute periods in 2023 was 86,916, up 9.6% from 82,238 in 2022. On a monthly basis, the number of treatment for the three major emergency patients in 2023 was higher than in the same month in 2022.
In January this year, the number of treatments in 2024 compared to 2023 increased by 6.6%. However, the number of medical treatments decreased by more than 1,000 every month compared to the same month last year from March, when the medical crisis began in earnest after the growth rate plunged to 88 cases (1.4%) in February. In July this year, it was confirmed that the number of people decreased by 1,458 (20.5%). As of January to July, the number of treatments in 2024 decreased by 11% compared to 2023, and if the period was limited to February to July, when the medical crisis was triggered, it decreased by 13.9%.
On the other hand, contrary to the decrease in the number of treatments for three major acute emergency diseases in regional emergency medical centers during the period, the number of 119 paramedics re-transports increased sharply. Compared to January 2023, the number of re-transfers in 2024 fell 22.3% from 346 to 269, but the number of treatments from February to July, when the medical catastrophe began, increased significantly by 57% from 2069 in 2023 to 3249 in 2024.
Lawmaker Seo Young-seok pointed out, "The government says that the emergency and emergency care systems are working well even in the medical crisis, but there is a lot of clamour that there is no room for patients to be transferred or to receive emergency room reception itself due to the lack of medical personnel at actual medical sites." "We have no choice but to assume that the so-called 'emergency room hit-and-run' continues and the lives of the people are at stake as much as the number of medical treatments that have decreased."
