Seoul National University Hospital received a commendation from the Minister of Health and Welfare for contributing to the vitalization of the life-sustaining medical decision-making system at the 「12th Hospice Day Ceremony」 on the 11th.

Hospice Day is the second Saturday of October every year, designated by the government to raise social awareness of the hospice, palliative care and life-sustaining care decision-making system. The Ministry of Health and Welfare has held an annual ceremony since 2013 to commemorate this, and commendations are given to meritorious people and organizations in the hospice, palliative care and life-sustaining care decision-making system.

Seoul National University Hospital, which received a commendation from the Minister of Health and Welfare in the field of the life-sustaining treatment decision system this year, has contributed to the establishment of related systems through pilot projects even before the enforcement of the life-sustaining treatment decision law.

In February 2018, when the Life-Sustaining Treatment Decision Act was implemented, the Medical Institution Ethics Committee was established to support and deliberate on decision-making on cases that cannot be applied to the simple law to operate the life-sustaining treatment decision system smoothly by providing deliberation, advice, education, and counseling on ethical issues.

In addition, Seoul National University Hospital is continuously making efforts to revitalize the life-sustaining treatment decision system by distributing the 「Standard Operating Guidelines of the Medical Institution Ethics Committee」 in 2021 to support patients, families, medical staff, and related workers participating in life-sustaining treatment decisions.

Moon Jin-soo, Chairman of the Ethics Committee of Medical Institutions (Department of Pediatrics and Youth), said, "This commendation is an achievement made by multidisciplinary members such as doctors, nurses, and medical social workers who have devoted themselves to the establishment and operation of the life-sustaining treatment decision system in the hospital. We will continue to do our best to support the resolution of ethical difficulties in making life-sustaining treatment decisions in clinical settings and to protect the dignity and values of patients at the end of their lives."."

Meanwhile, Seoul National University Hospital established the palliative care and clinical ethics center (Director Kim Bum-seok, professor of hematologic oncology) for the first time in Korea in 2018, and through this, it is striving to systematically support patients' dignified lives through a multidisciplinary approach that combines total care and clinical ethics for terminally ill patients.
