Oct 28, 2024

The Korean Kidney Association (Chairman Park Hyung-cheon, Yonsei University) announced that young kidney researchers in Korea proved once again that they are world-class at the 2024 American Kidney Week 2024 held in San Diego, USA from the 23rd to the 27th.

Kidney Week 2024 is the world's leading kidney medicine conference attended by 12,000 kidney experts from around the world.

The field of kidney medicine has received a lot of attention, with new drugs showing excellent effects on kidney disease, such as chronic kidney disease, diabetic kidney disease, and IgA nephropathy, recently released one after another. More than 150 nephrologists and researchers from Korea attended the conference as it was possible to gauge the level and direction of global research, including the release of the latest clinical trial results.

In particular, it drew attention by selecting outstanding studies among posters published by fellow researchers, who are the main players in the field of kidney medicine in the future, and setting up a 'Top traine posters' session.

Among more than 3,000 posters around the world, three domestic researchers were selected at the same time. The main characters are Song Da-woon (Konyang University Hospital), Song Seung-min (Samsung Seoul Hospital), and Oh Jae-ik (Seoul National University Hospital). The Konyang University Hospital team (Song Da-woon, Professor Park Yo-han) announced the results of a new method to evaluate the timing of discontinuation of dialysis using cystatin-C in the continuous intravenous hemodialysis filtration method applied to intensive care patients, and the Samsung Medical Center team (Song Seung-min and Professor Lee Jung-eun) announced a study that diabetic patients who took SGLT2 inhibitors had a lower frequency of acute kidney injury after surgery than those who took DPP4 inhibitors.

In addition, the Seoul National University Hospital team (Professor Oh Jae-ik, Park Se-hoon) conducted a gene analysis according to the clinical severity of diabetic kidney disease, and announced the experimental results that the expression of specific genes related to fibrosis increases as the severity increases.

Chairman Park Hyung-cheon expressed his feelings, saying, `I was moved by the presentation of the research results on par with the full-time colleagues at the best university hospitals in the United States and around the world, and I am proud of young kidney physicians in Korea who are working on research to overcome incurable diseases even in difficult times due to the legislative crisis.' The Korean Kidney Society supports active participation in overseas societies and supports research activities to encourage young researchers' research.
