Treatment of 30,000 trauma patients on the 10th anniversary of the Incheon Regional Trauma Center, the first of its kind in the country

Oct 24, 2024

The Incheon Regional Trauma Center, which opened in 2014 for the first time in the country to reduce the mortality rate of severely injured patients, celebrated its 10th anniversary.

The Regional Trauma Center is a trauma-only treatment center that operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, so that severe trauma patients can receive emergency surgery and treatment immediately upon arrival at the hospital for multiple fractures and excessive bleeding caused by traffic accidents, falls.

Gachon University Gil Hospital held a symposium commemorating the 10th anniversary of the opening of the Incheon Regional Trauma Center at Gyeongwonjae Ambassador in Incheon on the 24th. About 200 officials, including Kim Woo-kyung, head of Gachon University Gil Hospital, Kim Hak-beom, head of Incheon City's Health and Welfare Bureau, Kim Sung-joong, head of the Jung-eung Emergency Medical Center, and Jo Moon-joo, chairman of the Korean Society of Trauma, attended.

Hospital Director Kim Woo-kyung said in a congratulatory speech, `Despite the difficult times such as the COVID-19 pandemic over the past decade, the development of the trauma sector has not stopped"We will look back on the achievements of the past 10 years and prepare for the next 10 years."

At the symposium, Professor Yoo Byung-chul of Trauma Surgery presented the results of 10 years of treatment at the Incheon Regional Trauma Center, and Jeremy Hsu, head of the trauma center at Westmead Hospital in Australia, presented topics and panel discussions.

In addition, commendations were awarded to 119 paramedics who worked hard to transport trauma patients at the ceremony. A plaque of appreciation was delivered to Lee Jung-nam, a professor of trauma surgery (former head of the Incheon Regional Trauma Center), and Lee Kyung-cheon, a professor of anesthesiology and pain medicine.

Gachon University Gil Hospital treated 32,298 trauma patients over 10 years at the Incheon Regional Trauma Center. Among them, 5,604 severe trauma patients had a trauma score of 15 or higher.

The number of severe trauma patients increased from about 200 per year before the opening of the center in 2014 to 500 per year after opening, and then to 600 in 2021 and 700 in 2013. It is estimated that more than 800 severe trauma patients will be treated at the center this year.

Medical staff analyze that the annual increase in severe trauma patients is due to the establishment of a delivery system in which severe trauma patients are transferred directly to regional trauma centers rather than other emergency rooms immediately after the accident.

Professor Yoo Byung-chul of Trauma Surgery said in a presentation on the same day that the rate of severe trauma patients who visit the regional trauma center promptly to 119 without going through other hospitals at the scene of the accident has also improved from about 50% in 2014 to 70% now.

As for the type of trauma, blunt injuries were the most common at 90.5%. Penetrating injuries caused by stabbing accidents were followed by 7.9%. As the biggest cause of blunt injuries, accidents caused by traffic accidents (vehicle, bicycle, motorcycle, and other combined) accounted for the largest proportion with 9019, with 8,134 slipping and 5,923 injuries caused by falls.

The age of trauma patients has increased by about 11.8 years in the past decade. The average age of patients was analyzed from 47 years old in 2014 to 58.5 years old in 2023. It is analyzed as a result of the aging population and the active social activities of the elderly.

The Regional Trauma Center began operating in 2014 under the government's push to reduce the preventable mortality rate from trauma among preventable deaths, which means 'death that can be prevented if appropriate treatment is given'.

The Incheon Regional Trauma Center is directly transferred to the trauma center without going through the emergency room, allowing necessary measures and tests for the resuscitation area and minority rooms on the first floor. In addition, an angiography rooms, operating rooms, and intensive care rooms (intermediate patient rooms) exclusively for trauma are also in operation. Staff, including 21 trauma surgeons, 12 dedicated nurses, and 5 coordinators, are receiving medical treatment.

As a result, the preventable trauma mortality rate in Incheon is improving significantly. According to a report recently published by the Ministry of Health and Welfare 'Preventable Trauma Mortality Assessment Study', the preventable trauma mortality rate in Gyeonggi and Incheon decreased from 27.4% in 2015 to 10% in 2021.

Hyun Sung-yeol, Director of the Incheon Regional Trauma Center, said "We will do our best to understand the regional characteristics of Incheon, such as the industrial complex concentrated areas, the city center, and islands, and further reduce the preventable mortality rate in the future."."
