It has been claimed that a Russian pilot who bombed a Ukrainian shopping mall was killed by a blunt weapon.

Dmitry Golenkov, a 46-year-old Russian bomber pilot, was found dead in the town of Suponevo in the Russian state of Bryansk on the 20th (local time), the Ukrainian media Kyiv Independent said, citing sources from Ukraine's military intelligence agency (HUR).

Golenkov reportedly died after being hit in the head several times with a blunt weapon believed to have been caused by a hammer.

HUR released a photo of Golenkov's body in the orchard, but did not give a direct connection.

Golenkov, who served as chief of staff of the Russian Air Squadron, was a pilot of the Russian Air Force 52nd Heavy Bomber Regiment, where Tu-22M3 bombers were deployed.

He was involved in bombing civilian facilities in June 2022, including the Amstor shopping mall in the city of Kremenchuk in the Ukrainian state of Poltava, HUR claimed.

More than 1,000 people were inside the building at the time, with 22 killed and dozens injured.

Golenkov was also reportedly responsible for the January 2023 attack on an apartment building in Dniprosi, Ukraine's Dnipropetrovsk region.

It was the deadliest single Russian attack on Ukraine, killing 46 people, including six children
