According to local media VN Express, remains ranging from about 1 meter deep to about 150 shells were found in an alleyway on Thaison Street in Quangzong District, Hanoi City. Some were contained in the urn.
Construction has been suspended and authorities are identifying the remains.
Authorities will move the remains to a nearby cemetery if no one comes to recover them.
This is not the first time that remains have been found in the area.
In 2015, workers also found about 200 unidentified bodies while constructing a pavement drainage facility.
The remains were taken to a cemetery on the outskirts.
Locals claimed there was a large cemetery with thousands of graves in the area, which is home to Tyson Street.
One resident wrote, "When the city incorporated scattered graves a few years ago, the unclaimed remains were moved here and later forgotten", he explained.
