After the college scholastic ability test, one of the busy places is ophthalmology.

Test takers who have been wearing uncomfortable glasses since they were young will undergo vision correction surgery ahead of their full-fledged adulthood. Glasses and contact lenses are simple and useful ways to complement vision, but there are restrictions and inconveniences in daily activities. So recently, it is most common to solve myopia through femtosecond laser vision correction such as Smile Lasik and SmilePro.

However, not all myopia patients with bad eyes can undergo laser vision correction surgery. Surgery is restricted when near-sightedness is accompanied by near-sightedness, which is difficult to see in the distance, and astigmatism that overlaps and spreads objects or letters. Compared to people with myopia, the amount of corneal shaving increases, which can lead to unexpected aftereffects. Therefore, the more severe the astigmatism, the more careful it is to approach vision correction.

◇ astigmatism, inaccurate focus due to corneal oval...Things look superimposed or blurred

Gangnam Onnuri Smile Eye Clinic and Jeonju Onnuri Eye Hospital conducted a random survey of 299 nearsighted patients who had received Smile Lasik vision correction from 2023 until recently, and found that 72.2% (216) had astigmatism. In other words, more than 7 out of 10 people have astigmatism together.

In addition, the cost burden of astigmatism correction glasses or lenses (44.4%) was the most common discomfort experienced by patients due to astigmatism, followed by astigmatism and dizziness (38%), astigmatism wearing discomfort (25%), and 13% of the respondents said they could not see well even with glasses. 76.1% of the total wore glasses for more than 10 years, and 39.1% wore lenses for more than 7 years.

Astigmatism is a refractive anomaly in which light transmitted through the cornea cannot be concentrated at a point in the retina and has two or more points of focus. It is mainly caused by the pressing of the cornea and the shape of the cornea, which was circular, is transformed into an oval shape. The focus of the light coming in from the horizontal direction and the light coming in from the vertical direction are different from each other, causing things to look overlapped or blurred. It gives strength to the eyes to see clearly, making it easy to get tired and nervous. If the image of an object fluctuates and is severe, headaches and dizziness may appear, and astigmatism glasses have thickened lenses and high costs.

Astigmatism is classified as moderate for -2 to -3 diopters, and high astigmatism for -4 diopters or higher. -Light astigmatism of 0.5 diopter or less can be lived without glasses, and glasses are required for -0.75 to -1 diopter or more. In addition, light astigmatism can be solved together when correcting myopia with a laser, but advanced astigmatism of -4 to -5 diopters or more is a safety problem, and vision correction surgery is limited.

◇ High astigmatism is corrected by combining astigmatism correction with smile LASIK or smiley face

In the case of correcting astigmatism with traditional LASIK or LASEK, the amount of corneal shaving can be increased by 20-30% to restore the corneal shape to normal, which can worsen the aftereffects such as dry eyes after surgery.

In the case of Smile Lasik and SmilePro, which have recently become the most common laser vision correction surgery, the surgery itself is impossible due to safety and accuracy when astigmatism exceeds a certain standard (-5 diopters).

Kim Boo-ki, the director of Onnuri Smilean, introduced "It is practically the safest and most effective way for nearsighted test takers who cannot correct their vision with lasers to solve astigmatism first and then solve myopia with smile LASIK."

This is a method of gradually correcting vision by combining corneal incision astigmatism correction and smile LASIK or smile pro.

Astigmatism corrections solve astigmatism by finding the area of the cornea that causes astigmatism through precise examination and slightly incision with a fine knife to restore the tensile force of the cornea. Calisto-eye is a surgery that combines the technology of medical staff with an astigmatism tracking navigation device.

Compared to LASIK LASEK, corneas can be preserved up to 58% because there is no damage to the cornea center and the cornea is not cut with a laser. It is safe because there is very little risk of corneal dilation or confusion during corneal recovery.

Director Kim Boo-ki's team published clinical results to the American Ophthalmology Society (AAO) that observed more than six months after astigmatism orthodontic surgery was performed on 128 astigmatism eyes. The mean astigmatism, preoperative -2.36 diopters, improved from 61% of all patients postoperative to within 0.5 diopters and 85% of patients resolved astigmatism within an error of 1 diopters.

After solving astigmatism, correcting myopia with Smile LASIK or Smile Pro after a certain period of recovery will complete the vision correction procedure. In addition, the same method can be applied to cases where laser vision correction is impossible due to high myopia and high astigmatism and inevitably requires lens insertion surgery (ICL).

Chung Young-taek, director of Onnuri Eye Hospital in Jeonju, said "The most important thing in correcting the eyesight of the examinees who are about to enter the university and society is to restore their vision safely by preserving the surface of the cornea that protects our eyes as much as possible with minimal incision and minimal damage."It is right to closely check the degree of myopia, astigmatism, and corneal conditions through precise and accurate examinations before surgery, and to approach calmly by making a vision correction plan with medical staff."
