Action in Dreams 'Rem Sleep Behavior Disorder', Possibility of Parkinson's Disease Development
A sleep polymorphization test to identify REM sleep behavioral disorders.

REM sleep is difficult to distinguish compared to brain waves when the body is sleeping, but the brain is awake. Most dreams are dreamed in the REM sleep stage, and during REM sleep, the brain recognizes the dream as a reality and is activated. On the other hand, during REM sleep, muscles are paralyzed and do not move.

REM sleep behavior disorder refers to transferring dream behavior into actual behavior without suppression of muscle movement as if the brake pad is broken. Patients with severe REM sleep behavioral disorder can cause harm to themselves or those next to them by screaming or swinging their arms and legs as the contents of their dreams become active. There is a difference from sleepwalking (sleepwalking), which does simple behavior that is not related to dreams during the first half of sleep.

So far, nothing has been revealed about the exact pathogenesis, but it is known to be associated with degenerative brain diseases that appear as the cranial nerves fail to function over time. In fact, REM sleep behavioral disorders may appear in the early stages of degenerative brain diseases such as dementia and Parkinson's disease. The prevalence rate reported in Korea is 2.01%, and recently, one in 10 Koreans (15.9%) aged 50 to 80 years old have a pre-rem sleep behavior disorder (when one of the symptoms of REM sleep apathy or dream-behavior appears).

REM sleep behavioral disorders are identified by comprehensively evaluating brain waves, muscle conditions, and breathing conditions during sleep with a sleep polymorphization test if necessary. Patients with REM sleep behavioral disorder are observed to have increased tension during REM sleep and abnormal REM sleep abnormal behavior in the sleep polymorphization test.

There is no cure yet that can fundamentally eliminate REM sleep behavioral disorders. Maintenance treatment is mainly used to control the type or dose of the drug according to the course of symptoms. As there are cases that develop into degenerative brain diseases such as Parkinson's disease, treatment should be started quickly if there are suspicious symptoms.

Professor Yun Ho-kyung of the Department of Psychiatry at Korea University Ansan Hospital said, `If you experience REM sleep behavioral disorder, your sleep quality may be lower and your depression may be worse than that of the general public"Active treatment is needed not only for the safety of oneself but also for the people around you who are sleeping " he explained.
