Pyramid Lake in northeastern Nevada, the United States, is turning green, raising concerns.

According to foreign media such as Newsweek, NASA recently released a video of Pyramid Lake taken by the Landsat 9 satellite.

An intense and eerie green vortex was observed in the lake.

Pyramid Lake is 5,073,575㎡, about six times the size of Yeouido.

Some of these mysterious green swirls have been observed every year, but this year they have become worse.

Scholars explained that this cause was due to the fact that the level of 'Nodularia spumigena' exceeded the threshold.

Nodularia spumigena is a species of 'cyanobacteria', also called cyanobacteria.

It is typically present in warm, brackish waters (a mixture of fresh and brine) and changes the color of the water to green.

Algae look pretty, but release dangerous toxins such as microcystin, causing irritation to the skin, and ingestion can damage the kidneys and liver.

It can also cause rash, diarrhea, respiratory diseases, and neurological problems, so caution is needed.

Therefore, authorities warned residents and tourists not to come into contact with green algae.

"We expect it to take two to three weeks to normalize" he added.
