Vladimir Shikliyarov, 39, a world-renowned Russian ballerino who criticized Putin's invasion of Ukraine, has died suddenly. The Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg, Russia, announced on the night of the 16th (local time) that Shikliyarov, the principal dancer, had died.

According to foreign media such as Daily Star, the Mariinsky Theater did not say much about his death.

Russia's Investigative Committee said the "tentative cause of death" was an accident, but did not give details, saying it was "under investigation".

According to local media reports, he took painkillers ahead of foot surgery and fell off balance while smoking on the balcony of the fifth floor of his residential building in St. Petersburg.

He has a young son and a daughter with his ex-wife, ballerina Maria Sirinkina.

He has been a strong critic of Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

He wrote on social media at the time, "Against the war in Ukraine" and "Politicians should be able to negotiate without shooting or killing civilians, for which they were given tongues and heads.", he pointed out.

Also "My grandfather graduated from school with a gold medal around his neck in Ukraine, and my great-grandmother lived all her life in Kyiv, Ukraine" adding "It is impossible to watch everything that is happening today without tears"

He went on to "I want to dance and I want to love everyone. That is the purpose of my life. I don't want war or borders.'

Meanwhile, Siklyarov served as a principal dancer in famous works such as 「Swan Lake」,"Don Quixote" and"Giselle" performed by the Mariinsky Ballet. In 2019, he visited Korea and performed 'Mongryong' in the Universal Ballet's creative ballet 'Chunhyang'.
