Professor Kim Ji-soo of the Department of Neurology at Bundang Seoul National University Hospital, Professor Lee Hye-jin of the Department of Family Medicine, and Professor Kim Hyo-jung of the Medical Life Research Institute made the announcement through a study that analyzes the data requested by the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service and calculates the overall cost burden of society due to dizziness.
Dizziness is a common physiological symptom that one in three people suffer throughout their lives, and is caused by various causative diseases such as ear diseases such as otolithiasis, brain diseases such as cerebral infarction, systemic diseases such as heart disease, and psychological problems. If the cause of the disease is accurately identified, the treatment method is clear, but many patients travel to various hospitals and spend a long time and money just to determine the cause, and many of them stop treatment and are raising the disease.
The research team conducted a study to determine the extent to which such dizziness causes the burden of medical expenses nationally through data from the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service. As a result, more than 4% of all people visited medical institutions due to dizziness, and among the six major causes of dizziness, △positive sudden body Wi Hyun-hoon (28.34%) △ Meniere's disease (26.34%) △ psychogenic dizziness (18.95%), △ vascular dizziness (16.06%), △ vestibular migraine (6.39%) △ vestibular neuropathy (3.39%) had the highest cause rate.
The annual medical expenses incurred by the six main causes of dizziness were 547.8 billion won, and the annual medical expenses were the highest in benign sudden attack Wi Hyun-hoon (183.45 billion won). BPPV is also commonly referred to as otolithiasis.
In addition, the average medical cost used by dizziness patients for one visit to the hospital is 96,524 won, which is more than 30% higher than the average medical expenditure (73,948 won), and the causative disease with the highest one-time medical expenditure was confirmed to be vascular dizziness. In addition, the incidence of dizziness was higher in small cities than in large cities, which the research team estimates is a result of the rapid aging phenomenon in small cities.
Professor Kim Ji-soo of Neurology said, `As an aging society deepens, the prevalence of dizziness increases, resulting in a rapid increase in medical and social costs"When establishing national medical policies in the future, the burden of medical expenses due to dizziness should be considered."
Lee Hye-jin, a family medicine professor, then said "Dizziness occurs due to various causes, and accordingly, the medical departments to be visited are different, so patients can travel to various hospitals and medical departments, increasing medical expenses."If we have an efficient process for treating dizziness, we will be able to significantly reduce the burden of national medical expenses."
Meanwhile, the results of the study were published in the medical journal The Journal Of Korean Medical Science.
