Gangdong Kyunghee University Hospital Opens Obesity Metabolic Surgery Center Effective Treatment through Multidisciplinary Collaboration

Gangdong Kyunghee University Hospital (Director Lee Woo-in) has opened an obesity metabolic surgery center for obese patients with limited medical treatment or metabolic diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure.

The center provides effective treatment for high obesity and metabolic diseases through close cooperation with obesity metabolic surgery, endocrine metabolic medicine, sleep center neurology, psychiatry, and nutrition teams. The main targets are patients with ▲ body mass index (BMI) of 35 kg/㎡ or more, ▲ body mass index (BMI) of 30 kg/㎡ and comorbid metabolic diseases such as hypertension, type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, joint disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver, gastroesophageal reflux, and polycystic ovary syndrome, or ▲ body mass index (BMI) of 27.5 kg/㎡ or more + type 2 diabetes.

The Obesity Metabolic Surgery Center at Gangdong Kyunghee University Hospital obtained institutional certification from the Korean Society of Obesity Metabolic Surgery in August 2019, and is safely carrying out obesity metabolic surgery such as gastrectomy and Ruwai gastrectomy through laparoscopic and robotic surgery. Before and after surgery, a dedicated nurse provides a one-stop service from preoperative examinations to surgery through systematic schedule management to help treat related metabolic diseases as well as safe recovery and continuous weight management.

Choi Sung-il, a professor of surgery at Gangdong Kyunghee University Hospital, said "Obesity metabolic surgery is safe and induces maximum long-term weight loss, which is the most effective treatment for treating not only obesity but also related comorbid diseases."
