Herniated disc patient's must-avoid posture '3'

It is important to avoid these postures because they can put additional strain on the disk, pressure the nerves, or cause inflammation. With the help of Cha Kyung-ho, director of Yonsei Star Hospital, we summarized the posture '3' that must be avoided when you have a herniated disc.
◇All waist bending
The bent posture breaks down the natural S-curve of the waist and causes the disc to be pressed anteriorly (belly) and pushed backward by pressure.
If these pressures are concentrated at one point and persist, the disk will lose moisture, becoming drier and weaker in durability, which can eventually lead to disk escape.
In addition, the pressure on the disk may further open up cracks in the disk, causing inflammation of the surrounding tissue, which may worsen pain in the disk and nerves and increase inflammation, which may put more pressure on the disk escape site.
Therefore, it is recommended to avoid bending your back, such as sitting hunched for a long time in your daily life, the habit of sitting on the floor, sleeping in a shrimp sleeping position, and wearing a heavy backpack.
◇ Exercise to increase pressure at the center of the waist
In daily life, exercise that frequently lifts heavy objects or uses waistline intensively should be avoided.
Violent running, jumping, and high-intensity weight training can put a strain on the disk and worsen the condition.
When exercising, it is desirable to choose low-intensity, low-impact exercise, swimming, walking, and light cycling.
Instead, it is important to keep the muscles around the waist strong through exercise that strengthens the core muscles.
◇Incomplete recovery and mismanagement
Conservative treatment (drug, physical therapy) or injection treatment is performed in mild or early stages, and surgical treatment is performed in severe cases. Subsequently, if the pain disappears, there is no proper recovery period, or if you start your daily life with excessive exercise or incorrect posture again, the disk may escape again. Therefore, after being diagnosed with a disc, you should live with a sufficient recovery period along with lifestyle correction such as obesity and correct posture.
Cha Kyung-ho, director of Yonsei Star Hospital (neurosurgeon), said "Once the disk is damaged, the fiber wheel weakens after that and turns into a crack-prone state. This damaged disk is more sensitive to external loads or pressures, and is more likely to escape again, so following the rehabilitation program well after treatment and avoiding heavy loads in daily life will greatly help prevent recurrence of the disk.'
