The Korean Society for Tuberculosis and Respiratory Diseases (Chairman Chung Man-pyo) announced the results of a public awareness survey on the 21st Lung Day.
As a result of the survey, 97.6% of the respondents were aware of misinformation that exercise could increase lung capacity. In particular, 46% answered 'yes' to the question of whether they had experienced shortness of breath or breathlessness, while about 15% of them had experienced medical treatment, which often passed prognostic symptoms.
It has been shown that there is an urgent need to improve awareness of the need for early detection and treatment of lung diseases such as COPD and IPF (special pulmonary fibrosis). In particular, the lack of awareness was noticeable among the younger generation in their 20s and 30s.
Only 14% of those in their 20s and 15% of those in their 30s said they knew about COPD, and only 7% of those in their 20s and 11% of those in their 30s were aware of IPF. This shows that the younger generation is not aware of lung disease.
This is because young people who think they are in a relatively healthy state are often not aware of the importance of lung health. However, as early detection and prevention of lung disease is important, warnings have been raised that the younger generation should pay more attention.
Most (95.6%) are aware of dyspnea, cough, and sputum, which are the main symptoms of COPD, and 95.8% responded that they may be a precursor to lung disease, especially with respect to shortness of breath. Smoking was found to be the largest cause of COPD.
Fortunately, according to the survey, 91% of respondents recognized that smoking was the main cause of COPD, and 92.2% knew that in addition to smoking, indoor pollution and occupational exposure were also important factors. This is why practicing daily rules for lung health, such as indoor ventilation and regular exercise, is emphasized as an important precaution.
Chung Man-pyo, chairman of the Korean Society for Tuberculosis and Respiratory Diseases, said, `The society will serve as a bridgehead for more people to recognize and prevent COPD, a respiratory disease that many people suffer from around the world.' `Early detection and prevention are very important because lung is an organ that cannot be fully recovered once damaged.' In particular, people in their 40s and older should check their lung health through regular check-ups such as chest X-rays every year, and should not ignore precursor symptoms such as coughing and shortness of breath, he added.
Meanwhile, the Korean Society for Tuberculosis and Respiratory Diseases has designated the second Wednesday of October 'Lung Day' every year since 2003 to raise awareness of the importance of lung, and has effectively informed information related to the importance of lung health as well as raising awareness of COPD. This year, under the slogan 「Breathless, Signals from My Lung」, various activities such as a family lung disease story contest, an online step donation campaign, and an online ceremony are held to inform the risk of lung disease and emphasize the importance of early diagnosis and treatment.
