A female university student in Iran was arrested after protesting in underwear to protest whether to wear a hijab inside a school.

According to foreign media such as the New York Post, a female college student was caught by moral police while walking around in underwear on the campus of Azad University in Tehran, the capital of Iran, on the afternoon of the 2nd (local time).

A video released online shows a woman in a bra and panty being restrained by school staff on campus and then taken into a car by moral police.

According to local media, moral police tore the girl's clothes for not wearing her hijab properly, and the student was reportedly on campus in underwear in protest. The hijab refers to a scarf worn on the head by women in Islamic countries.

A university official said "Campus security intervened and handed over the student to law enforcement", and attributed the incident to 'student's obscene behavior'.

An online student group claimed that the woman was assaulted by plainclothes security forces during her arrest and that she had lost a lot of blood by hitting her head on a pillar or a car door.

However, the university confirmed the crackdown on the student, but refuted that there was no moral police assault.

She was admitted to a mental health facility after being taken to the police station, and university officials said she suffered 'severe psychological distress' before the incident.

A senior U.N. official expressed concern over the student's arrest.

U.N. Special Inspector for Human Rights Sato Mai will be watching the case closely, including the authorities' response," he said on social media.

Meanwhile, Iranian law requires all women, Muslim or not, to wear hijabs in public.
