Every November 11th is the "Heart Rhythm Day" established by the Korean Arrhythmia Association. The idea was to keep a healthy heart rhythm (pulse) by thinking about the pulse with two fingers.

◇ Increase the risk of atrial fibrillation, heart failure, stroke, and sudden death by 2 to 5 times

Arrhythmic 整脈 is largely divided into tachycardia with an abnormally fast heartbeat, abnormally slow bradycardia, early heartbeat (extra-terranean contraction), and atrial fibrillation in which the heart beats irregularly.

Among them, atrial fibrillation is an arrhythmia in which the heart beats irregularly and rapidly. There may be symptoms such as palpitations, chest tightness, and fainting, and there are many cases where there are no usual symptoms and are accidentally detected at a medical examination. High blood pressure, diabetes, and underlying heart disease are at high risk. In particular, the incidence rate increases as age increases. As of 2022, the prevalence of atrial fibrillation among people aged 60 or older in Korea is 5.7%, and the prevalence rate is increasing every year.

Kim Soo-hyun, a professor of cardiovascular medicine at Catholic University of Korea's Incheon St. Mary's Hospital, said "Atrial fibrillation increases the risk of heart failure, stroke, dementia, and cardiac sudden death by two to five times if not treated even if there are no symptoms."

◇ Self-diagnosis in case of suspected arrhythmia...The exact diagnosis is based on an electrocardiogram

Arrhythmia often develops and disappears, or occurs intermittently, so it may not be diagnosed immediately in the clinic. If symptoms due to arrhythmia are suspected, a direct pulse measurement may be helpful.

If you point the outside of your wrist with the opposite finger while your palm is turned upside down so that you can find where your pulse beats. When you can't feel it well, point out the pulse of the other hand. You can take about 10 seconds (10 seconds*6) to see if the pulse is regular, too slow (less than 60 times per minute), or fast (more than 100 times per minute), and not irregular. However, for an accurate diagnosis, an electrocardiogram must be taken at the hospital. Recently, smart watches and wearable electrocardiogram detectors can be used to record electrocardiogram when symptoms are present.

◇Different treatment and management methods depending on the type…If you have any suspicious symptoms, go to the hospital

Arrhythmia varies in treatment and management methods depending on the type, and age, underlying diseases, and symptoms are also important in determining treatment policies. You should fully consult with your specialist to establish a strategy tailored to each individual. In particular, atrial fibrillation can cause stroke, so the risk of stroke should be identified in advance and prevented with anticoagulants. In addition, atrial fibrillation can be controlled by medication and procedures.

Taking good care of chronic diseases such as high blood pressure, hyperlipidemia, diabetes, and obesity can also help prevent arrhythmia and reduce symptoms and complications. Patients with arrhythmia often know that they should not exercise, but not necessarily. Proper exercise is beneficial to cardiovascular health. However, depending on the type of arrhythmia, symptoms can worsen during exercise, so it is better to make a decision after sufficient consultation with your doctor. Factors that can worsen arrhythmia should be avoided. In particular, heavy drinking or binge drinking increases the risk of arrhythmia and can worsen symptoms caused by arrhythmia.

Professor Kim Soo-hyun said, "Early diagnosis and systematic management of arrhythmia can prevent complications and death"If you have any suspected symptoms, you should visit a hospital immediately" he said.
