The Alzheimer's Prevention Center at Korea University Guro Hospital is a center that diagnoses Alzheimer's patients early and minimizes the progression and deterioration of the disease through treatment tailored to each patient, such as anti-amyloid antibody treatment.
Alzheimer's disease is the most common disease that causes dementia, and it is a degenerative brain disease in which the brain gradually shrinks, including memory loss, starting with the accumulation of amyloid beta protein in the brain.
It is known that amyloid beta protein begins to accumulate in the brain about 20 years before patients feel early symptoms such as memory loss. As a result, a new anti-amyloid antibody treatment drug (name, Rechemby) was recently developed to prevent Alzheimer's disease by removing amyloid beta protein accumulated in the brain, and is currently being used in the United States and Japan. In Korea, the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety has approved the new drug and can be treated from December this year.
Kang Sung-hoon, head of the center, said "Removing amyloid accumulated in the brain through anti-amyloid antibody treatment in the early stages of Alzheimer's disease can delay disease progression"In particular, the more mild the symptoms are treated, the higher the treatment effect is, so we opened the center to focus on increasing the treatment effect by diagnosing it early through a precise diagnosis process..." explained the background of the center's opening.
The Alzheimer's Prevention Center at Korea University Guro Hospital accurately diagnoses Alzheimer's disease in patients complaining of memory loss, cognitive decline, and forgetfulness through amyloid PET, brain MRI, comprehensive neuropsychological tests, and APOE genotype tests, and provides customized treatment for each patient through anti-amyloid antibody treatment as well as education and cognitive training programs.
Director Kang said "Alzheimer's disease is a disease that can slow down the progression if well managed. We will effectively prevent and manage Alzheimer's disease through systematic education and cognitive training programs that can slow the progression of Alzheimer's disease, such as proper exercise, correction of cardio-cerebrovascular risk factors, cognitive training, abstaining from alcohol, and smoking cessation."
