According to CBS News and other U.S. media, 43 rhesus monkeys fled the Alpha Genesis research facility in Beaufort County, South Carolina, on the night of the 6th (local time).
Alpha Genesis is equipped with quarantine, breeding, retention, and research spaces, and is a place to develop non-human primate products and conduct biological research.
In particular, clinical trial studies on advanced brain diseases are being conducted.
It was estimated that the monkey group escape was caused by the manager's mistake and the door was not properly secured. CCTV footage shows other monkeys following and escaping as one escapes. There were 50 in total, 43 fled and seven remained in cages.
Police and the institute reported that the monkeys who fled are about 2.7 to 3.2 kilograms of young females and have not yet been used in the experiment.
Police deployed thermal cameras and traps to capture the monkeys again.
Authorities and police urged `Please close doors and windows firmly to prevent monkeys from entering the house.'
It also added that if found, do not approach the monkeys and call the police and rescue teams.
Greg Westergaard, CEO of Alpha Genesis, told the media that "The monkey's escape is disappointing" and "hope for a happy ending that returns to their will.'
According to local media, this is not the first time a monkey has escaped from the Alpha Genesis, and 19 escaped in 2016 and were reportedly caught again within six hours.
