According to a survey, the average Korean English ability has plummeted to 50th place in the world.

EF Education First (EF), a global education company, recently published the EF English Proficiency Index (EPI) report '2024.'

This is an evaluation and analysis of English proficiency in about 2.1 million adults in 116 non-English-speaking countries and regions around the world.

South Korea ranked 50th out of 116 countries.

It came down a notch from 49th place the previous year. Considering that it was ranked 36th in the 2022 survey, it was a 14-step plunge in two years.

By metropolitan and provincial cities, only Seoul received a 'good' score, followed by Daejeon, Busan, Incheon, Daegu, Ulsan, Gyeonggi-do, and Chungbuk-do.

Korea's 'English proficiency index' score was 523, exceeding the global average of 477. It was evaluated as 'moderate proficiency'.

In Asia, it ranked fifth out of 23 countries. It is followed by Singapore (3rd), the Philippines (22nd), Malaysia (26th) and Hong Kong (32nd). China (91st) and Japan (92nd) were included in the 'lower ranks'.

The Netherlands also topped the list for the sixth consecutive year this year, while Yemen was stigmatized with a 'last place' in 116th place.
