Ontario, Canada, will ban foreign students from entering medical schools from the fall of 2026.

According to local media such as CBC News, the Ontario government said medical schools pick at least 95% of their admissions capacity and allocate the remaining capacity to students in other Canadian regions.

It also said the state would pay for the tuition fees of more than 1,000 students who promised to become family doctors in Ontario. This is an expansion of the 'Learn and Stay' program, which supports tuition and other training costs.

Currently, approximately 88% of Ontario's total medical school capacity is already made up of students living in Ontario.

The number of international students is 24 out of 2,833 Ontario medical students in the 2023 academic year, accounting for only 0.85% of the total.

However, the state Department of Health explained that it is very unlikely that it will be able to accept foreign students if the medical school capacity is not filled.

The policy will allow about 1.36 million Ontario residents to seek family medical attention in the future, he said.

According to a study by the Canadian Institute for Health Information, 12% of Ontario residents do not have a doctor.
