A cancer patient in his 20s in China has been embroiled in embezzlement allegations after receiving an online donation for treatment.

According to Chinese media such as Dhawan News, a man named 'Ran Mufei' (29) from Yichang, central China's Hubei Province, was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma, a rare cancer, and began fundraising for 900,000 yuan (175 million won) on a crowdfunding platform in the middle of last month.

He introduced that he graduated from Nanjing University in Jiangsu Province in 2020 and worked for a famous IT company in Guangzhou before being diagnosed with cancer.

Then, with a picture of Hodgkin's lymphoma diagnosis, "Reoccurring makes it difficult to treat." he informed.

He also revealed that his family suffered from the medical expenses and death of his father and that he was in a lot of debt.

The fundraising campaign for him spread through Nanjing University alumni bulletin boards and social media.

He recorded his personal story through the video and also shared bank account information for donations.

However, on the 6th, allegations were raised that he embezzled money collected by fundraising.

It was revealed that Lan collected more than 700,000 yuan (136 million won) in just a few days by sharing photos of his newly purchased apartment in a group chat room.

In a group message, it said "This is my new home and the total price is 738,000 yuan".

In addition, marriage information company ads previously revealed that the family owns several properties, including two residential apartments worth up to 1 million yuan (about 190 million won). It was also found that he owns commercial real estate worth more than 3.8 million yuan (about 740 million won), earning 145,000 yuan (about 28 million won) in annual rental income.

In the wake of the controversy, the crowdfunding platform shut down Lan's donation channel the next day. Until then, he was found to have received more than 270,000 yuan (about 52 million won) from 4,536 donors on the funding platform.

In response, he denied allegations that he purchased real estate with the funds, claiming that he deposited 200,000 yuan of the donations into a regular savings account.

The crowdfunding platform said in an official statement on the 7th that it had confirmed that Lan had hidden the actual financial situation of his family.

The funding platform added "A total of 278,204 yuan raised to him in accordance with the regulations has been fully recovered and will be refunded to the donor"Blacklisted him to prevent future fundraising on our platform," he said.

It is unclear whether he will face legal punishment. However, fabricating facts or defrauding relatively large amounts of public or private property by concealing the truth in accordance with Chinese law can be fined or confiscated, along with a sentence of up to 10 years in prison or life imprisonment.

Netizens posted critical comments such as "'Those who actually need to donate will be harmed because of this man'", "'You made a donation to a rich person', and "This is why you don't trust the crowdfunding platform".
