An incident occurred in which a U.S. police officer shot and killed his homeowner in a whimsical manner instead of a robber.

According to ABC News and other U.S. media, Brandon Durham (43), who lives in Las Vegas, Nevada, reported to the police at around 0:40 a.m. on the 12th (local time) that the two were shooting outside the house and trying to break into the house.

He informed the police report center that he was inside the house with his 15-year-old daughter and would go into the bathroom and lock the door.

Afterwards, police officers who were dispatched saw the window broken and broke the front door and began to look around.

In the meantime, police officer Alexander Bookman (26) heard screams and noises and saw two men fighting at the place where he ran. One was wearing underwear and the other man was wearing a red hoodie and a black jacket.

A man in a hoodie was holding a knife and an unclothed man grabbed and pushed his opponent's arm.

At this point, the officer Bookman screamed "Put the knife down" and fired the gun about two seconds later.

The man in his underwear who was shot collapsed and the bookman fired five more shots in about three seconds.

But the man who was shot was Brandon Durham, the owner of the house who reported it. He died at the scene.

Alejandra Boudreau, the gunman who collapsed with him, was fine. Durham's family vented their anger, saying the police thought he was the culprit and fired the gun.

Durham's body was shot several times and seriously damaged, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, a local media outlet.

The officer who shot, Bookman, is currently under investigation on paid leave.
