Written by Professor Kim Hyun-soo of the Department of Mental Health at Myongji Hospital, 'The Birth of Monster Parents' was selected as the book of Asia that shone this year' at the 2024 Asian Book Awards held on the 7th.
This book deals in-depth with the phenomenon of 'monster parents', which has recently been a problem in the educational field, and analyzes the background of the occurrence and social structural and psychological factors. 'Monster Parents' refers to parents who pressure teachers and schools with unconventional and excessive demands in the name of protecting and loving their children.
Professor Kim Hyun-soo points out the adverse effects of them on the educational environment through his book and suggests measures to solve them. He also emphasized the importance of an environment where all students can learn safely and comfortably, digging into the causes of parents becoming 'monsters', such as slow changes in patriarchal culture, the absence of a childcare support system, and a fiercely competitive society.
The Asian Book Awards Selection Committee praised the book's analysis of precedents in Asian countries, including Japan, as well as South Korea, and said it played a role in presenting the community a new perspective of reflection and reducing the cost of resolving conflicts.
