'Asian Pre-Care Plan Guidelines' were prepared considering the Confucian culture of East Asia.

Catholic Kwandong University International St. Mary's Hospital announced on the 6th that Professor Kim Sun-hyun and nurse Kim Jung-young participated in the establishment of the guidelines along with Professor Seo Sang-yeon of Dongguk University Ilsan Hospital as representatives of Korean researchers.

The guidelines, established by palliative care experts from Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Singapore, are a research paper titled 「Definition and referrals of advance care planning: A Delphi study in five Asian sectors」 and were published in Palliative Medicine, a prestigious SCIE journal in the field of palliative care.

Professor Kim's research team has continued to hold international research meetings since late 2017 through the Delphi technique, which draws opinions with repeated feedback from experts, and published a paper in October.

Advance Care Planning (ACP) is a kind of medical will, and under this plan, patients can choose the medical practice they want at the time of their death. In Korea, a letter of intent or a life-sustaining treatment plan is prepared in accordance with the Life-Sustaining Treatment Decision Act.

This study contains the definition of pre-care plans and components, roles, timing, and specific recommendation guidelines of Asian cultures that have a family-based end-of-life culture.

Professor Kim Sun-hyun of the Department of Family Medicine at St. Mary's Hospital said, `In a family-centered Confucian culture, patient autonomy is often excluded during the dying phase.'"This study applied a family-based approach that included patient autonomy in line with global standards."."

The study involved 21 palliative care experts from five countries, three European palliative care experts, and a panel of 77 experts from each country. The research team developed 84 recommendations in the first round, and then collected opinions from many experts until the fifth round to establish definitions and guidelines for pre-care plans suitable for Asian culture.

Professor Kim said, "This guideline is significant in that it is the first definition and recommendation for the pre-care plan established in Asia. In particular, it contains the roles of individuals, families, and medical staff in the care process and legal and administrative procedures, so it is expected to be used not only in clinical practice but also in various areas such as policies and systems."," he said.
