According to a survey of the 50+ generation in Seoul conducted after COVID-19, health (39.3%) was the biggest concern for those aged 65 to 69. However, according to Alcon's survey, many seniors feel uncomfortable with their eyes, but do not know much about cataract treatment.
On the 16th of last month, at the 2024 Korea Senior Job Fair held at Cheongnam University in Cheongju, Chungcheongbuk-do, aimed at the development of jobs for the elderly and better future growth, Korea Alcon conducted a sticker survey on eye health, including symptoms of vision discomfort and differences in presbyopia and cataracts, and delivered educational materials related to eye health to sticker survey participants. The survey conducted by Alcon Korea is designed to show seniors' perceptions of eye health and cataracts, such as ▲ how they are experiencing discomfort in their eyesight as they get older ▲ whether they know the difference between presbyopia and cataracts.
As a result of the survey, 89.2% of seniors felt discomfort in their vision with age, saying yes to 'near vision (25.3%)', 'things look overlapping or blurry (35.3%)', and 'there is light smudging or glare (28.6%)'. When asked if they knew the difference between presbyopia and cataracts, 63.9% said yes. Seniors who attended the Senior Job Fair are well aware of the importance of vision because they strive for employment and job retention, and it is interpreted that interest in cataracts is also high.
On the other hand, unlike the survey that they were well aware of the difference between cataracts and presbyopia, the perception of surgery itself, the only treatment method for cataracts, was low. In fact, according to the 「Alcon Eye on Cataract Survey」 conducted on 7,300 people in 10 countries around the world, including 575 Koreans in 2023, Korean respondents showed less understanding of cataract surgery than the average in 10 countries. 'Surgery is painless',' implanting a permanent prosthetic lens into the eyeIn contrast to 57% and 58% of the population of the remaining nine countries except Korea, respectively, who said they knew about the two items, only 39% of Korea showed a low result of less than 40%. In addition, 34% of respondents misunderstood that bandages were necessary after surgery, and it was confirmed that accurate information on cataract surgery by seniors was needed.
Choi Joon-ho, head of Alcorn Surgical's business division in Korea, said, `This survey is of great significance in that the need to find out the actual state of eye health awareness of seniors and raise eye health awareness has emerged.'"Eye health care is essential for seniors to continue healthy social life in this age of 100." In particular, in the case of cataracts, special attention from seniors is needed because those in their 60s or older account for more than 80% of the total number of patients, and early detection is more important than anything else." "Korea Alcorn will continue to strive to improve the quality of life by improving the eyesight of everyone, including seniors," he said.
Meanwhile, Alcorn drew high attention by providing senior eye health education lectures on the differences between cataract surgery and presbyopia correction and the expected effects of cataract surgery for seniors who participated in the event.
