They were sentenced to four months in prison on felony charges.
According to Chinese media Xiao Xiang Morning News and Hong Kong media South China Morning Post, Wen, a man and Zhang, a woman living in Henan Province, China, met in their children's class chat room. Wen was a married man with two children and Zhang was a married woman with four children.
The two gradually developed feelings for each other by exchanging contacts and having frequent conversations.
Wen frequently expressed his affection for Zhang, which caused him to feel a warmth he had never experienced before.
In particular, Jang was mentally and physically exhausted as he often suffered from domestic violence at the time.
After being beaten and verbally abused again by her husband in June 2019, she suggested Wen run away to Tianjin, about 680 kilometers away, and start a new life just for the two of them.
As a result, Wen moved to Tianjin with Chang, leaving his children without divorcing his wife. Since then, the two have lived together for almost five years.
Then, when Mr. Jang became pregnant, Mr. Wen returned to Henan Province to divorce him. Jang divorced her husband after giving birth to Wen's child.
It is unclear whether they remained in contact with their families during their cohabitation.
In May, the two returned to Henan Province and told police they lived together.
One netizen speculated that they turned themselves in to the police after learning that they could not get a marriage certificate and register their newborn's family register.
In China, cohabitation with someone other than your spouse is not legally and morally acceptable, and bigamy can be sentenced to up to two years in prison.
The ruling, which came out of the first trial recently, was made public, where the court convicted Jang and Wen on charges of heavy marriage and sentenced them to four months in prison.
However, Jang's sentence was suspended for six months because he had to take care of his child.
When the ruling came out, there was a heated debate online.
Netizens say that marriage is not a game, but a responsibility. Calm communication and family protection should come first in difficult times", "It left a big scar on the other children.", "Women who suffer domestic violence are mentally and physically vulnerable."
