November 9 is Jaw Joint Day, established by the Korean Academy of Facial Pain and Oral Medicine.

This day is to strengthen publicity about patients with jaw joint disorders and the high prevalence rate, and to emphasize the urgency of treatment, the anniversary is November 9 every year, conceived from the emergency number '119'.

The jaw is located in the center of the face and plays an essential role when chewing and talking. The jaw joint is one of the most complex and sensitive of the many joints of our body, connecting the mandible (lower jaw bone) and the temporal bone (head bone) and is located right in front of both ears. The jaw joint supports any activity that opens or closes the mouth. If you feel uncomfortable due to 'joint sound' that occurs when you open your mouth and pain during writing, you can suspect jaw joint disorder.

Jaw joint disorders are caused by various causes such as bad habits, stress, malocclusion, and trauma. Among them, the habit of overstressing the jaw joint is considered a major cause of jaw joint disorder.

Frequent chewing of hard or tough food, falling asleep with teeth clenched, biting nails with front teeth, and chewing food with only one side constantly put pressure on the jaw joint. In addition, psychological factors such as stress, anxiety, and tension, as well as malocclusion, traffic accidents or trauma, can worsen jaw joint disorders.

Kim Hyun-je, a professor of dentistry at the Catholic University of Korea's Incheon St. Mary's Hospital, said "Since the cause of jaw joint disorder is very complex, the cause should be subdivided and identified through diagnosis"The underlying cause and condition can be accurately identified only after several diagnostic processes such as mandibular range test, jaw joint sound test, muscle palpation test, and radiation test are performed."

A typical symptom of temporomandibular joint disorder is pain. Pain around the jaw and ear occurs when chewing, and there is also a crackling sound when moving the jaw. When you open your mouth, your jaw doesn't open or get caught, and in severe cases, your mouth may hardly open.

Professor Kim Hyun-je said "Jaw joint disorders can spread pain not only to the jaw, but also to the head, neck, and shoulders. When muscle tension is accompanied by jaw joint disorders, headaches and neck pain often occur and shoulders are easily stiffened. "Jaw joint disorders affect various body parts and show complex symptoms that can significantly reduce the quality of life."

Early treatment is more important than anything else because once the jaw joint is broken, it is difficult to recover. Protecting the jaw joint from further damage is the basis of treatment, and occlusal treatment, drug treatment, physical therapy, exercise therapy, and behavior therapy are performed depending on symptoms and causes.

Anastomosis stabilizer (sprint) therapy is a treatment that relaxes muscles and protects teeth by reducing the habit of tightening or adjusting the occlusal position by installing an occlusal stabilizer. Physical therapy or exercise therapy helps relieve pain by relaxing the muscles of the jaw, neck, and shoulder. If necessary, muscle relaxants, painkillers, and tranquilizers may be prescribed, and Botox injections may relieve tension in severe muscle pain. In addition, if stress and tension are needed, relaxation exercise or psychological counseling may be performed at the same time. Through biofeedback, patients can also train themselves to maintain muscle relaxation.

To prevent jaw joint disorders, it is important to improve lifestyle habits above all else. Avoid caffeine, salty foods, and drinking alcohol, and avoid hard or tough foods. You should reduce the habit of biting your teeth and be careful not to open your mouth wide. It also reduces stress and gets enough sleep. Maintaining the right posture is also important to protect the health of the jaw joint.

Professor Kim Hyun-je advised "Early prevention and proper management are key because once the jaw joint is damaged, it is difficult to recover."'As small habits in daily life greatly affect the joint health of our body, it is necessary to improve the habits that strain the jaw joint.'
