According to CNN and other foreign media, the bodies of 11 Indian nationals and one Georgian citizen were found on the second floor of an Indian restaurant in Gudauri, Georgia's largest ski resort, on the 14th (local time). They were all workers at the restaurant where the bodies were found.
Police said an initial investigation found no signs of assault or injury on the body.
The cause of death is believed to be carbon monoxide poisoning. A generator was installed in an enclosed space near the bedroom, which appeared to have been activated after power was cut off the previous day.
Investigators believe this caused carbon monoxide poisoning and are conducting an autopsy.
Carbon monoxide poisoning refers to a state of being addicted to carbon monoxide, a colorless, odorless, tasteless, and non-polar gas caused by incomplete combustion of carbon-containing substances. Inhaled carbon monoxide combines with hemoglobin instead of oxygen, resulting in hypoxia because oxygen cannot be properly transported to each tissue.
Early symptoms of addiction include headache, dizziness, nausea, and if it gets worse, symptoms such as lethargy, coma, seizure, and respiratory paralysis can occur.
Meanwhile, Gudauri, located high up in the Caucasus Mountains close to the Russian border, is popular with tourists as it is cheaper than Europe's major resorts in the Alps. According to a local consulting firm, more than 300,000 foreign tourists visited Gudauri Resort last year alone.
