Dec 11, 2024
It is predicted that the proportion of the elderly population in Korea will reach 37.3% by 2045, making it the highest in the world.
At the 6th 'Population Strategy Joint Forum' held at the Korea Press Center on the 11th, Joo Hyung-hwan, vice chairman of the Low Fertility and Aging Society Committee (low-level), presented the projections.
The forum, co-hosted by the Low Council, the Economic, Humanities and Social Research Council of Korea, was held under the theme of 「Diagnosis and Tasks for Aged Society」 ahead of the entry into a super-aged society where the proportion of the population aged 65 or older is more than 20% of the total. Korea will enter an ultra-aged society next year, with more than 20% of the total population aged 65 or older, just seven years after becoming an aged society with more than 14% of the population aged 65 or older.
Vice-Chairman Joo said, ""The elderly population is expected to increase by about 1 percentage point a year from next year, with the proportion of the elderly population exceeding 30 percent of the total by 2035, and the world's highest at 37.3 percent by 2045The bigger problem is that the proportion of the population aged 80 or older, which has a large burden of medical care and care, has more than quadrupled in the past 25 years, and one in five people will be over 80 by 2050. He also stressed that a new paradigm suitable for a super-aged society is needed to enhance the sustainability of our society in 2040 when Korea's life expectancy reaches 87.2 years, up 2.9 years from the current (84.3 years this year)."
