"4.7% of Canada's annual deaths were euthanized 96% white"

Dec 12, 2024

It was found that 4.7% of Canada's annual deaths chose euthanasia.

According to a BBC report on the 11th (local time), Canada's Ministry of Health announced that 15,300 Canadians, 4.7% of the total annual deaths, were euthanized last year.

Canada's euthanasia population has been growing for five consecutive years. However, last year's growth rate was 16%, which was slower than the past average of 31%.

Of those who chose euthanasia, 96% were terminally ill patients on the verge of death and 4% were patients with long-term chronic diseases. The average age at the time of euthanasia was 77, and the most common disease was cancer.

In addition, Canada's Ministry of Health counted the euthanasia population by race for the first time this year, with 96% of the total being white, followed by 1.8% of Asian descent. In addition, 37% of all euthanasia is carried out in Quebec, which accounts for 22% of Canada's population by region.

Canada, which legalized euthanasia in 2016, has been gradually expanding the scope of euthanasia. Initially, euthanasia was allowed only if it was clear that death was imminent, but in 2021, patients who were debilitated by chronic diseases were also allowed to be euthanized. Currently, Congress is discussing a bill that would allow euthanasia even for mentally ill people.

Meanwhile, very few countries in the world, including Australia, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Spain, Austria, Belgium, and Switzerland, have euthanasia legal.
