According to NBC and other foreign media, the Swiss Ski Federation announced that Sophie Hediger died after an avalanche occurred at Arosa Resort in the Swiss Alps. It has been nine days since I turned 26 on the 14th.
The Swiss Ski Federation said it would not release additional information about Hediger's death at the request of the family.
According to French media Le Parisien, local police announced that Hediger died in an avalanche while backcountry skiing. However, the identity of the victim was not disclosed at the time.
Backcountry skiing means enjoying skiing in nature, not on a designated course.
Hediger was found two hours after emergency services and police launched a search, but he had already died.
Heavy snow in Switzerland last week increased the risk of avalanches, local media reported.
Meanwhile, Hediger represented Switzerland at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics in the women's snowboard cross and mixed team events.
He also took the podium twice for the first time at the 2023-24 World Cup, and finished second in the Swiss side's World Cup skiing in Saint-Mauritz in January.
