Many people who had been innocent in prison have been rescued since the collapse of Syria's Bashar al-Assad dictatorship.

In the meantime, it was argued that the man reported as an inmate was actually a brutal torture technician.

According to the New York Post, CNN international correspondent Clarissa Ward stumbled upon a man hiding under a blanket in a windowless cell last week when a U.S. television crew entered Damascus prison escorted by rebels.

"One of the most special moments I've ever witnessed in my 20 years as a journalist," Ward said on the show at the time, comforting the man and giving him a bottle of water. "It's okay. It's okay. It's okay. It's okay."

She then grabbed the man's arm and brought him out of prison, and he looked up at the sky and was thrilled.

CNN reported that the man, who identified himself as Adel Gurbal from the central Syrian city of Homs, had been held in a cell for three months and was not even aware that the Assad regime was toppled by rebels led by al-Qaida-linked Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) a few days ago.

But then a major reversal occurred.

The man, who claimed to be a prisoner, was actually Salama Mohammad Salama, a notorious torture technician, according to local independent media outlet 'Verify-Si'.

He allegedly killed civilians during the Syrian civil war in 2014 and detained and tortured young people under false accusations. It turned out that he worked for various security agencies and used brutal torture and assault against civilians.

He recently got into a dispute with a high-ranking officer in the process of sharing extortion money and was imprisoned in the prison a month ago.

Verify-Sissy appeared to be in good order and physical health, with no visible signs of injury or torture""As soon as I got out of prison without sunlight, I didn't flinch or blink even when I looked up at the sky.", he pointed out.

After coming out of prison, he disappeared after receiving treatment, but his whereabouts are currently unknown.
